Emotionally loaded - why an ‘early’ family meeting is vital!

The potential need for aged care can be an emotionally loaded conversation for all member of a family. In fact we have seen many occasion where parents and their adult children avoid talking about it until they have no choice, by which time it is often too late for any effective planning.

There is no substitute for an open and frank family meeting.  Some families do this on their own, other families sometimes ask for us to facilitate such a meeting.

A well-run family meeting gives parents, adult children and other family members an opportunity to discuss issues and preferences, address concerns and make decisions that work for the family as a whole.

As advisers, we often add value by breaking down a mountain of data into bite-sized chunks of relevant, meaningful information – to assist with decision making.

The earlier that families take this step, the better.  With a well organised plan in place, families can respond quickly and effectively when a care event occurs.
